ORGANS IN & AROUND CHESTERFIELD

ST. LEONARD, SCARCLIFFE

Scarcliffe lies close to Bolsover, near the Nottinghamshire border. This small village was the site of a Romano-British settlement; the church of St. Leonard dates from the 12th-century, and contains an organ which was installed by Albert Keates (Sheffield) in 1908. It was inspected in 1977 by Henry Willis & Sons Ltd., who recorded the following stoplist:

In 1977 Willis was presented with a proposal for a new organ, using the redundant instrument previously in St. John the Baptist, Staveley, which had been stored at Scarcliffe since 1973. The tonal scheme was to be unaltered; the organ was to go on the west gallery, with a new case and new electro-pneumatic action. This scheme was the brainchild of a local enthusiast who had purchased the Staveley instrument, but a year later no decision had been made, and Willis proposed one of its 'Junior Development Plan' instruments. In 1979 their tuning contract was terminated.

In 1988 Chalmers & Hyde (Dronfield) rebuilt the extant organ with several new ranks and extensions. The stoplist is now as follows:
