JULIAN RHODES' DREAM ORGANS
MEDIAN means 'placed in the middle', and this level is thus named for its position at the heart of the instrument.The metaphysical nature of the Loggia division is indicated by its name, TEMENOS, which means a sacred enclosure. Its two sections are named after the philosophers Athanasius Kircher (1602-1680) and Robert Fludd (1574-1637). Renaissance men, their world-view was permeated by the immanence of God in his creation.
The stop-names in the KIRCHER section come from his illustration 'The History of the World's Creation' from his 'Musuria Universalis', 1650. (This illustration can be seen on the philosophy page). Fludd illustrates the six days of creations as the six stops of an organ. Inscribed below the keyboard is the phrase:
Sic ludit in orbe terrarum aeterna Dei sapienta which means 'Thus God's eternal wisdom plays in the sphere of the worlds', a paraphrase from the Book of Proverbs in the Bible.
The two main FLUDD sections are derived from his idea of the 'universal monochord', a cosmic symbol of the whole of creation, the 'harmonic order' of which forms the music of the spheres. On this monochord, the top and bottom notes of the string are in the proportion 1:4 (proportio quadrupla) and represent heaven and earth.
The Greek names for these proportions are: Disdiapason (double octave); Diapason (octave), Diapente (fifth); Diatessaron (fourth). I have used these names in the Fludd section; the Greek term 'Mese' (unison) is used in the corresponding Pedal section.Strings of lengths 1x and 4x produce notes two octaves apart. The other proportions follow analogically: Proportio Dupla = 1:2 and 2:4 (octaves); Proportio Sesquialtera = 2:3 (fifth); Proportio Sesquitertia = 3:4 (fourth).

The GREAT division is essentially a five-fold structure, an expression of Pythagorean and ancient Egyptian number symbolism. The Centre chorus is augmented by Upper and Lower choruses (emphasising high and low pitches respectively) and expanded by the colours of the Left and Right choruses. There is also a Bombard section with full, strong voices.
SWELL is divided into four sections. Centre has the main diapason structure; Left contains horn and cone diapasons; Right contains tibias. The flutes and strings within each section are reciprocal, as are the woodwind choruses on Left and Right, and the large brass choruses on Centre and Pleno. The latter section is a 'super Swell' with its batteries of brilliant mixtures and rich reeds. The separate enclosure of each section adds flexibility. This is the 'compound expression' advocated by G.A. Audsley.
SOLO develops complete families of unusual tonalities. The Centre section is for 'aural effects'.
PIANO, as its name suggests, is a section of quiet, gentle voices. As such it is useful either in combination with, or in contrast to, the tonal structures of Swell and Great.
The three STRING sections contain mild (left), normal (centre) and keen (right) string tone.
BASTARDA means 'crashing' in Latin, and contains some of the most dominating reeds in the instrument. Thees ranks have the same function as the big tubas in a British romantic organ. All ranks are vertical, not chamade, and named as follows:
ZUBAN: A gutsy, full-toned reed. The name means 'claw' in Arabic.
KHAZDUM: A rough, piercing reed. The name means 'scorpion' in Persian.
HUTABHUJ: A fierce-toned reed. The name means 'devourer of the sacrifice' in Hindi.
LESATH: A biting-toned reed. The name is from the Arabic 'Al Las'ah', meaning 'the sting.'On Pedal: Bastarda, the stops are:
Throughout the stoplist, f = flat; n = natural; sh = sharp; sl. = slightly; v. = very.SARPA: A sharp-toned, biting reed. This name has the same root as 'serpent'.
KARRANAY: A full-toned reed, named after the Arabian processional trumpet.
In mixture specifications, if 'f' or 'sh' precedes the pitch of a rank, a semitonal change is meant.
If 'f' or 'sh' follows the pitch of a rank, detuning to form a celeste beat is meant.
