JULIAN RHODES' DREAM ORGANS
This level is named after eponymous divisions such as that in the 1772-3 Isnard at St. Maximin-en-Var, Provence. It complements and expands the possibilities of the Median level, and may be regarded as an extention thereof.LOGGIA has a medieval/renaissance flavour. Its stops are:
The Grand Chorus and Eclat divisions are in effect a 'super Great' and 'super Swell'. Their tonalities are generally bolder than those of the corresponding divisions on the Median level.BAZUK: A mixture whose odd harmonics create a cold, unresonant sound, after the Turkish lute.
BLACK KORNETT: Named after the renaissance instrument, and so constructed: a curved resonator covered with black leather producing a mellow, horny timbre. Its position on the left side of the section (opposite WHITE KORNETT on the right) is symbolically apt.
BLADDER PIPE: A narrow scaled open metal flute with a thin, penetrating tone, after the medieval instrument.
BLOCK FLUTE: An open wood flute of hollow, breathy timbre.
CIDERNE: A piquant mixture evoking the timbre of the 16th-century wire-strung guitar.
(Cedirne: Magdalen Colege, Oxford - Renautus Harris 1690)
IVORY FLUTE: A cool, pure-toned open flute evoking the timbre of stops made from this material, e.g. at Weingarten Abbey - Gabler 1750.
LOVEBIRD: An harmonic metal chimney flute of wide scale and forthright tone, evoking the cry of the eponymous bird.
PHAGOTUM: A half-length fagotto of thin, earthy timbre, named after the medieval bagpipe.
TIORBA: A half-length reed with a mellow, slightly quinty timbre. This name appears in 18th-century Spanish organs.
TOURNEBOUT: A mellow, earthy krummhorn with wooden resonators, after the 19th-century instrument.
VULGARIS: A half-length oboe evoking the timbre of the medieval pipe. The name is Latin for 'common'.
WHITE KORNETT: As for the BLACK KORNETT, but with resonators covered with white leather.
STRIDOR means a loud, strong shout or noise. There are four sections: one of diapasons and mixtures, and three of chorus and chamade reeds. The flue division includes:
Two reed sections have their pipes horizontal, one section vertical. Their respective tonal structures reflect this. The overall sound of these sections should be rich and round, compared with the brilliance of the Coruscation section on the Corona level.BIFFARO: A full-toned diapason. The name is derived from 18th-century 'Piffaro' stops such as that at Weingarten, comprising choruses of principal-scale pipes.
NAIR: A unison and quint chorus mixture. 'Nair al Saif' means 'the bright one' in Arabic.
ATORAGE: A mixture including tierce and septieme ranks. This name is from 'Al Thurayya', meaning 'several small components' in Arabic.
SLAGTONE: A mixture including flat-quint and natural-septieme ranks. The name comes from the German 'schlagen', to srike, suggesting the sound of metallic percussion.
(Schlagtone: St. Andreas, Hildesheim - von Beckerath 1966)
CORNET CLAMANT: The second word comes from the Latin 'clamare', to cry out.
The chamade reeds of division I are located among those of division II, but bracketed further forward and of dominating character. In their midst is the stop:
Around it project the pipes of the other two families:GISBANAMRUSARPAN: These reed pipes are arrayed like radiating spokes, forming a circle. This Babylonian name means 'the shining disk in the front'.
Division II contains a further 66 ranks of chamade reeds, including quint and tierce harmonics, as follows:MARUSHAPUUMASHMASHU: A rich, commanding chamade-horn. This Babylonian name means 'the front mouth of the twins', here referring to the location of the pipes in the facade.
PAPILSAK: A brassy, commanding trumpet. This Akkadian name means 'sceptre' or 'great fire'.
Division III consists of reeds vertically disposed within the instrument. There are 77 ranks including harmonics at thr second and fourth.SHEDAR: Full and rich-toned, consisting of between one and three ranks of unison and quint pitch. This name comes from the Arabic 'Al Sadr', meaning 'the breast'.
SIR: Bright and edgy in tone, consisting of two ranks of unison pitch. This Babylonian name means 'snake'.
KAKKABMULUIZI: A three-rank stop, consisting of unisons three octave apart, with a quint in the middle equidistant from both, e.g. 8', 2 2/3', 1'. This Babylonian name means 'star man of fire'.
SARFATH: A two-rank stop usually including unison and tierce ranks. 'Al Sarfah' means 'the changer' in Arabic.
MASTABBATURTUR: A fairly unassertive 2-rank stop. This Babylonian name means 'the little twins'.
In the first three STRING sections, section I has 8' stops; section II has 32' to 1' stops including quint and tierce harmonics; section III has 128' to 1/2' stops including septieme, none and onza harmonics. The registers in the string divisions are not intended as imitations of orchestral string tone. Violino signifies a thinner or milder toned rank than the broader, richer Viola. The stop-names in this section include the following suffixes:UDKUDUA: A foundational horn consisting of one or two unison ranks. This Babylonian name means 'smiting sun-face'.
ARKUSHAPUUMASHMASHU: A rich, firm trumpet. This Babylonian name means 'the rear mouth of the twins', here referring to the location of the pipes behind the facade, and complementing MARUSHAPUUMASHMASHU in division I.
IKHMA: A 2-rank stop, comprising one unison and one mutation. The name means 'twins' in Khorasmian.
UDKUGABA: A free-toned trumpet consisting of one or two unison ranks. The name is an alternative reading of UDKUDUA (above).
String IV comprises Phonon (forthright foundational), Muto (muted) and Legno (wooden pipes) registers.- di Concerto: a normal, cantabile string, contrasting with
- di Ripieno: a rich toned register.
- Acuta: keen toned.
- Sorda: of muted tone.
- Rico: of broad, full tone.
- Dolce: sweet and gentle toned.
VOX houses the largest Vox Humana choruses in the instrument. Many of the stop-names are deived from vocal terms, emphasising the pitch relationships within the choruses. Though not specifically developed here, there is also the possibility of the production of definite 'vowel' sounds by the use of shaped resonators. Wedgwood (1905) illustrated several curiously shaped resonators, which were the result of experiments by M. Kratzenstein, demonstrated to the St. Petersburg Imperial Academy of Sciences in 1779.
The registers on Pedal: Loggia include:
New stop-names on Pedal: Stridor are:PLAGINE FLUTE: A narrow-scale harmonic wood flute of clear, pure tone. Named after the medieval Greek transverse flute.
VINA: A piffaro of harmonically rich string ranks, evoking the Indian plucked-string instrument.
TURBINELLA: A horn with a dull, leaden timbre, evoking the Indian shell trumpet.
Throughout the stoplist, f = flat; n = natural; sh = sharp; sl. = slightly; v. = very.NASHIRA: A bright unison/quint chorus mixture. The name means 'bringer of good tidings' in Arabic.
PROCELLA: An harmonic colouring mixture including tierce and septieme harmonics. This Latin name means 'storm' or 'violent wind'.
SHARRU: A full, earthy toned chamade reed. This Babylonian name means 'king'.
HALHALLATU: A brassy horn, after the Akkadian instrument.
PRITITHI: A bright-toned reed. The name means 'two claws' in Coptic.
In mixture specifications, if 'f' or 'sh' precedes the pitch of a rank, a semitonal change is meant.
If 'f' or 'sh' follows the pitch of a rank, detuning to form a celeste beat is meant.
