JULIAN RHODES' DREAM ORGANS
Here is an 1821 entry from the ledger of J.C. Bishop (1783-1854) for a chamber organ for a Mr. Wilson, whose address is believed to been Bouverie Street, London. I have supplied the bracketed pitches of the stops; none appear in the source. The "additional Row in a Line" refers to a duplicate keyboard provided for the performance of organ duets. The "Second Sett" was presumably an enclosed Swell division.
The Organ to be from GG to G in alt. with an additional Row in a Line for a Second Performer from F. The Great Organ to contain (8) Open Diapason Thro in Metal (8) Stopt do (4) Principal (2 2/3) Twelfth (2) Fifteenth (8) Bafsoon (8) Dulciana (8) French Horn from F Second Sett (8) Open Diapason (8) Stopt Diapason (4) Flute (8) Claribella (8) Hautboy (8) Cremona £504
This stoplist is distinctive in its concentration on solo colours rather than choruses - there is no Great mixture or Swell Principal. The Claribella, newly-invented by Bishop, is present, and a French Horn replaces the usual Trumpet. The Swell is an attractive collection of solo and accompanimental registers.
