JULIAN RHODES' DREAM ORGANS
The following proposal by Edmund Schulze (1824-1878) for an organ in Cologne Cathedral is taken from 'A Practical Treatise on Organ Building' by F.E. Robertson (London, 1897). The author was evidently an enthusiast for the work of Schulze, as he also gave stoplists of six other instruments in England and Germany built by the Schulze family. The stop-names are largely Anglicised throughout, and there is no information about the date or provenance of this scheme.GREAT 32 Untersatz 16 Sub Principal 16 Bourdon 8 Major Principal 8 Minor Principal 8 Hohl Flute triangular; harmonic from c2 8 Gedackt 8 Gamba 8 Spitz Flute 5 1/3 Gedackt Quint 4 Octave Major 4 Octave Minor 4 Harmonic Flute 4 Rohr Flute II Rausch Quint V Mixture III-V Scharf III-IV Cornet 16ft. 16 Tuba Harmonic 8 Trumpet 8 Horn 4 Clarion SWELL 16 Bourdon 8 Principal 8 Gemshorn 8 Terpodian 8 Harmonic Flute 8 Viola 8 Voix Céleste tc 8 Gedackt 4 Octave 4 Viol d'Amour 4 Harmonic Flute II Rausch Quint IV Mixture 16 Contra Fagotto 8 Oboe 8 Trompete 4 Clarin CHOIR 16 Lieblich Bourdon 8 Geigen 8 Salicional 8 Lieblich Gedackt 8 Flauto Traverso 8 Harmonika 4 Octave 4 Gemshorn 4 Gedackt Flute 2 Piccolo II-IV Mixture 8 Clarinet ECHO 16 Lieblich Bourdon 8 Dulciana 8 Dolce tc 8 Zart Flute 8 Vox Angelica 8 Flauto Dolce 4 Dolcissimo 4 Celestina 4 Echo Flute II Rausch Quint PEDAL 32 Sub Principal 16 Major Bass 16 Minor Bass 16 Violone 16 Sub Bass 16 Viol d'Amour 16 Lieblich Gedackt 10 2/3 Gedackt Quint 8 Octave Major 8 Octave Minor 8 Violoncello 8 Viol d'Amour 8 Flöten Bass 8 Gedackt 6 2/5 Terz Gedackt 5 1/3 Quint 4 Octave IV Bass Cornet 32 Contra Posaune 16 Posaune 16 Fagotto 8 Trumpet 4 Clarin Manual compass: 61 notes. The following undated proposal by A.W. Gottschalg for Cologne Cathedral is taken from 'The Organ' by Hopkins & Rimbault (1877 edition). Stop names, presumably largely Anglicised, are given according to the source; as are the idiosyncratic Pedal reeds and the XV rank Great Mixture.GREAT 32 Manual Untersatz (Sub-Bourdon) 16 Principal (Double Diapason) 16 Gamba 16 Flauto Major 8 Principal No.1 (in English tin) 8 Principal No.2 (small scale) 8 Viol di Gamba 8 Double Flute 8 Fugara 8 Hohlflote 5 1/3 Quint 4 Octave 4 Rohrflote 4 Gemshorn 2 2/3 Twelfth 2 Fifteenth 1 Octave Fifteenth V Grand Cornet 5 (16ft. tone) XV Mixture (4ft. tone) V Mixture 12 V Sharp Mixture 15 - Clarinet (with divided lips) 16 Bombarde 8 Tromba 8 Trombone 4 Clarion CHOIR 16 Principal 16 Flute Conique 8 Principal 8 Double Gedackt 8 Salicional 8 Rohrflote 8 Dolce 8 Quintaton 5 1/3 Quint Flute 4 Gambette 4 Octave Flute 4 Fugara 4 Viola 2 2/3 Gemshorn Quinte 2 Doublette 2 Wald Flute V Cornet V Mixture 16 Contra Fagotto 8 Trompette Harmonique 8 Bassoon and Clarionet 4 Clarion Conique SWELL 16 Bourdon 8 Gemshorn 8 Flute Harmonique 8 Keraulophon 8 Bourdon 8 Viole d'Amour 8 Voix Celeste 5 1/3 Rohr Quint 4 Violin Principal 4 Traversflote 4 Dulciana 2 Piccolo Harmonique V Echo Cornet (4ft. tone) II Sesquialtera 12.17 IV Harmonia Ætheria 15 16 Euphone 8 Trompette Harmonique 8 Basoon Oboe 8 Cor Anglais 8 Vox Humana 4 Clarion Tremulant to Vox Humana SOLO 16 Lieblich Gedackt 8 Fernflote 8 Echo Dulciana 8 Vox Angelica 8 Harmonica 4 Klein Gedackt 4 Orchestral Flute 4 Violin 2 Flageolet 8 Corno di Bassetto 8 Tuba Mirabilis (with swell effect) PEDAL 32 Principal Bass (English tin; 1-10 in the front) 32 Grand Bourdon 16 Contra Bass 16 Principal Bass 16 Sub-Bass 16 Violin Bass 16 Bourdon 10 2/3 Quint Bass 8 Octave Bass 8 Violoncello 8 Flute Bass 8 Gedackt Bass 6 2/5 Great Third 5 1/3 Octave Quint 4 Fifteenth 4 Octave Flute V Cornet 15 32 Contra Bombarde 16 Bass Trombone 16 Contra Fagotto 8 Trombone 8 Posaune 8 Bassoon 4 Juba Clarion (sic) Couplers: 9 unison (no Solo to Choir); Solo 8ve, Great 8ve, Swell 8ve to Choir; Swell sub8ve to Choir.
