JULIAN RHODES' DREAM ORGANS
Hope-Jones issued a leaflet in 1893 with his design for a new organ at St. Alban, Holborn, London. It was to cost £2,670, and a further £143 to insert the prepared stops in the Swell division. The stoplist was reproduced in an article by B.B. Edmonds in 'The Organ', January 1958. Edmonds commented: "The solo was to be enclosed, and the solo to swell, choir to swell, and swell to solo, were to be second-touch couplers. There was to be double-touch on the solo to great, swell to great, and swell to choir. That is, the first group could only be used on second touch, whereas the latter group could be used normally as well."This scheme, predating the famous Worcester Cathedral organ by three years, shows an interesting blend of traditional features mixed with Hope Jones's progressive tonal ideas.
These plans came to nothing; the church opted for a four manual organ by Father Willis.
